How to Register and Study for United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®) Step 1?

Step 1 assesses whether you understand and can apply important concepts of the sciences basic to the practice of medicine, with special emphasis on principles and mechanisms underlying health, disease, and modes of therapy. It ensures mastery of not only the sciences that provide a foundation for the safe and competent practice of medicine in the present, but also the scientific principles required for maintenance of competence through lifelong learning.

Step 1 is constructed according to an integrated content outline that organizes basic science material along two dimensions: system and process.

Step 1 is a one-day examination. It is divided into seven 60-minute blocks and administered in one 8-hour testing session. The number of questions per block on a given examination form may vary, but will not exceed 40. The total number of items on the overall examination form will not exceed 280.

Recently there has a major change on United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®) Step 1 that the score reporting is transitioned from a numeric score and pass/fail outcome to pass/fail only.

After this changes there has been major changes on the goal for the exam preparation from getting the highest possible score into achieving a pass score only.

As we known that United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®) Step 1 focus on the emphasizes basic science principles, specifically in anatomy, behavioral science, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology.

The first step for the exam preparation is (Set and book a date and specify your references).

There are a lot of references available for the preparation.
Most famously are
First Aid for the USMLE Step 1.
UWorld (Qbank).

Preparation (Variable based on the accumulative knowledge).

  • If you have a good background from medical school with reviewing First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 and doing UWorld (Qbank) twice with excellent performance, generally this would be sufficient to get pass score.
  • If you have a weakness at one of the basic science subject, you can have more detailed preparation at this specific subject to master it.
    According to the subject to be imroved, there are many good resources can help you in the exam preparation.

TIPS
•There is no ONE best plan !
•Ask more than one examines, but not too many !
•Find a study buddy
•Be confident and define your goal
•You will go through ups and downs, completely normal
•No interruptions
•Focus on your defects/weaknesses
•Do not waste time on what you know
•Assess your performance objectively not subjectively
•Do self assessment exams couple of weeks ahead of your exam date
•You will never feel competent in everything.
•Read, Digest, Repeat, Repeat, and Repeat.

The big anxiety and stress for United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®) Step 1 has become much less.
