How to Register and Study for United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®) Step 2-CK (“Clinical Knowledge”)?

Step 2 CK assesses an examinee’s ability to apply medical knowledge, skills, and understanding of clinical science essential for the provision of patient care under supervision and includes emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention.

Step 2 CK ensures that due attention is devoted to principles of clinical sciences and basic patient-centered skills that provide the foundation for the safe and competent practice of medicine under supervision.

Step 2 CK is a one-day examination. It is divided into eight 60-minute blocks and administered in one 9-hour testing session. The number of questions per block on a given examination will vary but will not exceed 40. The total number of items on the overall examination will not exceed 318.

After United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®) Step 1 score reporting is transitioned from a numeric score and pass/fail outcome to pass/fail only, the weight of United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®) Step 2 CK has become higher and more significant.

Step 2 CK includes test items in the following content areas:

  • Internal medicine
  • Obstetrics and gynecology
  • Pediatrics
  • Preventive medicine
  • Psychiatry
  • Surgery
  • Other areas related to providing care under supervision

Most Step 2 CK test items describe clinical situations, and you’ll have to provide one or more of the following:

  • Diagnosis
  • Prognosis
  • Indication of underlying mechanisms of disease
  • Next step in medical care, including preventive measures

There are many available resources for Step 2 CK, however most important resource is Uworld STEP 2 CK. It is the most important resource to understand the format of the exam very and to assess yourself through. It covers approximately most of the topics needed for the exam. Doing two round with excellent performance and high yield clinical knowledge would be the most important step for you to assess yourself.

There are many assessment exams and tools for USMLE STEP 2 CK with different predictability.
Most famously are National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) 6,7,8
Besides, Uworld self assessments (1,2).

•There is no ONE best plan !
•Ask more than one examines, but not too many !
•Find a study buddy
•Be confident and define your goal
•Passing Vs High score
•You will go through ups and downs, completely normal
•No interruptions
•Focus on your defects/weaknesses
•Do not waste time on what you know
•Assess your performance objectively not subjectively
•Do self assessment exams couple of weeks ahead of your exam date
•You will never feel competent in everything.
•Read, Digest, Repeat, Repeat, and Repeat.
